Equity Analyzer

Step 1.  Download the software.  Click here to download the evaluation version of the "Equity Analyzer" software, which is compressed into an eqawinxp.zip file for your convenience.  You may select any directory on your machine to save the software.

Step 2.  Install the software. Open a windows explorer, locate the downloaded eqawinxp.zip file, and double click on it.  Most windows system will automatically expand the zip file into an eqawinxp direcory when you select "extract all files" to unzip the file.  If you machine does not have an zip/unzip software, you may go to http://free-backup-software.net/index.htm to download a free (and excellent) compression software to unzip the eqawinxp.zip file. Double click on eqawinxp.zip after you install the JustZipIt software.

Double click on the Setup.exe in the expanded eqawinxp directory.  An Equity Analyzer installer frame will appear.  Follow the instructions in the frame to install the software.  The installer will create an Equity Analyzer shortcut on your desktop.

Step 3.  Run the software. Double click on the Equity Analyzer icon on your Desktop, or select "Start"->"All programs"->Equity Analyzer->Equity Analyzer icon  will start the software.

Step 4.  Download data. The "Equity Analyzer" software provides a "Data Loader" tool for you to retrieve free historical stock/option data from the Internet. Press "Data loader" button to start the tool. Click here to see the instructions for downloading the historical stock and/or option data you want to analyze.

Step 5.  Draw charts. Press "Open" button and select a stock data file you saved when downloading data using the "Data loader" tool. A stock chart frame will appear in the charting area of the software. Clicking on the items of the "Chart type" combobox and "Chart periodicity" combobox at the left bottom of chart frame allows you to switch chart types and time unit scales. The software allows you to draw "Candlestick chart", "Line chart", and "Bar chart".  It also allows you to draw charts on "Daily", "Weekly, and "Monthly" time scales.

Step 6.  Draw lines. Press "Trendline" button, "Cross" button, "Horizontal" button, or "Vertical" button in the top of the chart frame enables you to draw lines on the chart area.  Press "Trendline" button, click on a point in the chart to start drawing a trend line, then click on another point on the chart to end the drawing of the trend line.  Likewise, press the other buttons and then click on a point of the chart area will draw corresponding lines.

Press "Select" button in the top of the chart frame will disable drawing lines.

Step 7.  Move lines. Press "Select" button at the top of the chart frame, click on the line you want to move, and then drag it to where you want to in the chart area.

Step 8.  Delete lines.Press "Select" at the top of the chart frame, click on the line you want to delete, and then press the "Delete" key on your keyboard.

Step 9.  Draw indicator lines.  You may draw up to five different indicator lines by selecting items of "Indicators" combo box at the bottom of the chart frame. The indicators in the list are "SMA" (Simple Moving Average), "EMA" (Exponential Moving Average), "MACD" (Moving Average Convergence Divergence), "RS" (Relative Strength), "RSI" (Relative Strength Index), and VAD (Volume Accumulation Distribution). Click here to find the definitions and formulas of the above indicators if you are not familiar with them. Information about chart types, trend lines are included as well.

Step 10.  Customize indicators. Press "Edit" button next to "Indicators" combobox. An "Indicator Setup Dialog" will appear. Click on the tabs to customize the parameters of each indicator. Press "Ok" buttom to save the changes you made and close the dialog. Press "Default" button to set all parameters to default values. Press "Cancel" button to cancel your changes and close the dialog.

Step 11.  Customize charts. Press "Left" or "Right" button to shift your chart to left or right. Press "Scale up" or "Scale down" button to scale your chart on vertically (y-axis) while pressing "Zoom in" or "Zoom out" to scale your chart horizontally (x-axis).

Step 12.  Save your chart. Click on the chart you want to save, and then press "Save" button to save the chart.

Step 13.  Print a chart. Click on the chart you want to print, and then press "Print" button to print the chart.

Step 14.  Design investing strategies.  Press "Strategy Designer" button to bring up a "Strategy Designer" frame for designing investing strategies. Through a combination of "Buy stock", "Short stock", "Buy call", "Buy put", "Write call", and "Write put", you can design, evaluate, and compare the potential gains (losses) of most investing strategies including complex strategies such "Straddle", "Strangle", "Butterfly", etc. Click here for instructions on how to use the "Strategy Designer" tool.

Step 15.  Exit the software. Press the small "X" button at the right-top corner of the frame to exit the "Equity Analyzer" software.

Step 16.  An example. In the figure below shows an example in which MSFT, ^IXIC, SIRI, and BWNG are displayed. A trend line is drawn on the ^IXIC chart.

Step 17.  Uninstall the software. Click on the Setup.exe in the "eqawinxp" folder that was created in Step 2. Follow the instructions in the popped frame to uninstall the software.
